Winthrop Position Title Graduate Associate for Diversity and Student Engagement
Job Purpose
The Graduate Associate for DSE is a key part of the leadership team of reports to the Assistant Dean for Diversity, Engagement, & Inclusive Excellence. As an office operating with only one professional, the Graduate Associate provides essential support upon which many services and initiatives depend. The purpose of this Graduate Associate position is to support diversity and inclusion initiatives of the Office Diversity & Student Engagement and the Diversity Center. Aligned with the values and strategic plans of Winthrop University, this associate position aids in the development of student leaders, global citizens, and lifelong professionals. This position provides direct support for multicultural students; the department is integral in building and maintaining community. Graduate students in this role: increase awareness of issues and concerns in multicultural communities through programming and diversity training, enhance our campus climate, and provide support for the student groups.
The Graduate Associate total package compensation is as follows:
$7,000 tuition waiver ($3,500 per semester) + $7,182 stipend ($3,591 per semester at approximately 300 hours) = $14,182 total value. The hourly pay rate is $11.97.
Duties and Responsibilities
Programmatic Delivery
  • Serve as co-coordinator for multicultural programming and events that enhance diversity
awareness and inclusion that may include, but not limited to, Black History Month Celebration, MLK Celebration, LGBTQ+, First-generation Celebration, Veterans Engagement, Women of Excellence, and Hispanic Heritage.
  • Participate in select institutional events to help market and promote the work of the Diversity Office, as needed (i.e. Winthrop Day, Summer Orientation, Involvement Fairs, Open House)

Diversity Center
  • Assist with promotion and operation of the Diversity Center
  • Make recommendations for new resources and material for the Diversity Center
  • Coordinate use of the resource center when requested by student groups
  • Create a marketing plan and outreach efforts to student organizations for
  • Diversity Center usage and diversity trainings

Student Engagement & Support
  • Serve as co-advisor for Diversity Peer Educator Program
  • Establish and maintain relationships with multicultural student organizations; support partnerships and collaborations among multicultural student orgs through initiatives such as the Unity Roundtable
  • Serve as a resource and referral agent to students

Administrative Support
  • Responsible for maintaining the Diversity Office email account and monitoring Diversity Office social media outlets
  • Represent the office on select committees such as the MLK Day Committee, Welcome Week, or Family Day, LIFT Planning Committee, as needed.
  • Update Diversity Office materials, website, and promotional items
  • Assist with management of team meetings

  • Conduct 1:1s with the DPE student team at least once per semester

Qualifications
* Must be a full-time graduate student at Winthrop University
* Must be in good academic standing
* Must have an understanding and appreciation of diversity and social justice
* Must have excellent organization skills
* Must be able to communicate effectively, both written and verbally
Preferred Skills
  • Experience working in a collaborative and results-oriented environment
    Understanding and appreciation of diversity and social justice
    Experience presenting a variety of content and experience in diversity training
  • Experience with event and program planning
  • Be a team player
